Drinking Games
Three classic party games from the original PartyJunky list, from a quick circle game to a full-on table sport.
Three games from the original PartyJunky list. Any of them work just as well with soda in your cup.
Never Have I Ever
You need: a drink for each player.
How to play:
- Sit in a circle.
- Take turns saying something you have never done. Start with “Never have I ever…”
- Anyone who has done it takes a drink.
- Keep going around the circle.
Viking
You need: a group around a table and a drink for each player. No other gear.
How to play:
- Pick a player to start. That player is the Viking.
- The Viking puts their hands up beside their head like horns and wiggles their fingers for a few seconds.
- The player to the Viking’s right paddles like they are rowing a boat to the right. The player to the left paddles to the left.
- The Viking then claps and points both hands at another player. That player becomes the new Viking, and the players beside them start to paddle.
- Keep it moving as fast as you can.
When you drink:
- You are slow to become the Viking when someone claps at you.
- You forget to paddle, or you paddle the wrong way.
- You fall for a fake clap. A fake clap is when the Viking starts to clap at you and stops at the last second. If your hands go up, you drink.
A big mistake earns a big sip. Do not fake-clap too often, or the table can make you drink too.
Beer Die
Players who love Beer Die call it a sport, not a game. It takes some setup, so many fans leave the table up in a garage or basement.
You need:
- 1 banquet table, about 8 feet long, with about 4 feet of open space around it
- 4 chairs with no arms
- 4 plastic cups (12 oz each)
- 1 die
- A ball of string, a tape measure, a pencil, a hammer and a sheet of newspaper
Set up:
- Put 2 chairs at each short end of the table.
- Mark the middle of the table with the pencil.
- Hang the string from the ceiling across the middle of the table, like a net. Set the height so that a toss over the string is a challenge.
- Hang the newspaper over the string. It keeps the string straight and helps you see if the die went over.
- Each player fills a cup with beer and sets it on the table near their corner.
Teams and turns:
- Two teams of two play at a time. Make a list if more people want to play.
- For the first game, one team calls odd or even on a roll of the die. A correct call wins the first toss. After that, the winning team tosses first and picks its side.
- The team that tosses is on offense. The other team is on defense. Teams switch after each toss, and teammates take turns tossing.
- Stay in your seat when you toss. A soft, high arc works best.
- If the die hits the table and bounces off, the defense must catch it with one hand. You cannot trap it against your body. There is no out of bounds, so dive if you must. Be honest about catches.
Points:
- Only the team on offense can score.
- A game goes to 5 points, and you must win by 2. If the score reaches 6 to 6, the next point wins.
What happens on each toss:
| The toss… | Result |
|---|---|
| Lands in a defender’s cup | Offense scores 1 point. The defense finishes their beers and refills. No drink penalty. |
| Hits a cup and stays on the table, or bounces off and is caught | Defense takes 1 drink penalty. No point. |
| Hits a cup, falls off the table, and is not caught | Offense scores 1 point. Defense takes 1 drink penalty. |
| Hits only the table, falls off, and is not caught | Offense scores 1 point. No penalty. |
| Hits only the table, falls off, and is caught | No point. No penalty. |
| Flies over the whole table | Offense takes 1 drink penalty. Defense does not need to catch it. |
| Does not clear the string | Offense takes 1 drink penalty. |
| Lands in the tosser’s own cup | Big foul. The table decides your punishment. |
Drink penalties:
- A drink penalty is a sip from your game cup. Penalties do not change the score.
- On a team’s 5th penalty, both players finish their beers. Then they refill and their penalty count goes back to 0.
- If you empty your cup before the 5th penalty, you must refill, and your count does not reset. Some players keep a second drink under the table for that reason.
Good sport: shake hands when the game ends. Do not gloat when you win, and do not sulk when you lose.
Drink responsibly. Never drink and drive. 21+ only in the US.
